Overcoming Homesickness & Finding a Routine

Overcoming Homesickness & Finding a Routine

Moving to a new country is always a bit scary, but I honestly wasn’t as homesick as I expected. A lot of my friends were struggling with it, missing home and feeling out of place, but I found myself enjoying the experience more than missing home. Of course, there were still moments where I felt it—mostly when I thought about my family or the familiar routines I had back home.

Adjusting to a New Life

The hardest part wasn’t necessarily being far from home, but getting used to the cultural differences. The way people socialize, the university system, even simple things like public transport being mostly trains instead of buses—everything felt different. It made me procrastinate on certain things, avoiding events because I felt like I wouldn’t fit in. I don’t drink or party, which is a big part of student life here, so sometimes I felt like I was missing out. But in the end, I found my own way to enjoy things.

How I Found My Routine

The biggest thing that helped was making good friends. Having people to go to class with, shop with, and take small trips with made daily life a lot more enjoyable. We’re all in the same situation, adjusting together, so that made things easier.

I also focused on making my space feel like home—I bought plants, started cooking more elaborate meals, put up posters, and even got a Google Home Mini. Just small things that made my place feel comfortable.

Daily Life & What I Enjoy Most

These days, I have a routine that works for me. I go to uni in the morning, grab lunch, and then explore the city center or visit the library before heading home to cook and talk with my flatmates. One of the best things about living in Stuttgart is the freedom to travel. My train pass lets me go anywhere, which makes everything feel more accessible.

Recently, I’ve also picked up running, which helps me stay healthy and feel productive.

Advice for Anyone Feeling Homesick

Make friends and build a home for yourself. Surrounding yourself with good people and personalizing your space can make a huge difference.

Looking Ahead

In the coming months, I’m looking forward to meeting new people and making the most of my time in Germany. I’ll be heading back to the UK soon to visit family and friends, but for now, I’m focusing on enjoying life here.
